Gary J. Mayo, Founding Principal


Gary J. Mayo has over a decade of experience developing and implementing environmental policies, strategies for sustainable development, and corporate social responsibility initiatives.


Prior to the formation of Sustainability Excellence Associates, Gary served as the Vice President, Corporate Sustainability Strategies for MGM MIRAGE Corporation, where he was the key architect in the creation and execution of the strategies to “green” the company’s ten Las Vegas resort casino properties and the CityCenter complex.


Gary also worked for Ford Motor Company and Visteon Corporation prior to retiring with 30 years of service in November 2006. As Director, Government Affairs & Corporate Responsibility for Visteon, Gary had oversight for Government Affairs, Environmental Affairs, Community Affairs, and the Visteon Fund Corporate Philanthropy Program. Under his leadership, Visteon achieved several key milestones including selection for the Dow Jones Sustainability Index for five consecutive years, publishing its first annual sustainability report, and establishing a Board-Level Corporate Responsibility Committee. He also collaborated with members of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development and the University of Cambridge Programme for Industry in the development of “CHRONOS,” an e-learning tutorial on the business case for sustainable development.


He currently serves on the Board of Directors for Capstone Turbine Corporation, the world's leading producer of low-emission microturbine systems. Gary has also served on boards and advisory committees for numerous sustainability-oriented organizations including the Sustainable Business Institute, the China-US Center for Sustainable Development, and the Society for Organizational Learning Sustainability Consortium. In addition to being a practitioner, he has lectured on sustainability and corporate social responsibility at colleges, universities, and business conferences around the globe.


Gary earned a Master of Business Administration degree from The Fuqua School of Business at Duke University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing from Long Island University, C.W. Post Center. He has also completed the University of Cambridge Business and the Environment Programme in the U.K., the Director Certification Program at UCLA’s Anderson School of Management, and executive education programs at the Aspen Institute, Duke University, and the University of Michigan.
